Chana Dal Stuffed Paratha | Split Bengal Gram Stuffed Indian Flatbread

Parathas are counted amongst the staple breakfast foods for all the Punjabis across the world; and me being one of them, have too grown up gorging on a variety of these quintessential flat breads all my life. Be it the world-famous Aloo ka Paratha, the rustic Mooli ka Paratha, the delectable Gobhi Paratha, the healthy Paneer Paratha or the simple Onion Paratha, I have had them all. But.... when it comes to picking my favorite of all, there is only one which tops my list and that is none other than this delicious Chana Dal Stuffed Paratha. Loaded with peppy flavors and a unique texture, needless to say, these gorgeous parathas make for an absolute treat for any food lover; pair them up with plain curd, homemade white butter or a tangy mango pickle on the side and you are all set for a celestial morning bliss right on your breakfast table. Curious to know how it is made? here you go with the recipe...

Ingredients

Whole wheat flour - 2 cups
Ghee/clarified butter - 1/4 tbsp + little extra to smear the parathas
Boiled and coarsely mashed chana dal - 1 cup
Chopped coriander - 1/2 cup
Chopped green chilies - 1 to 2
Finely chopped onions - 1/4 cup
Grated ginger - 1 inch
Red chili powder - 2 tsp
Coriander powder - 2 tsp
Pomegranate powder - 2 tsp (you can also use dried mango powder if pomegranate powder is not available)
Roasted cumin powder - 1 tsp
Salt - as per taste

Method

1. First knead the dough using wheat flour, clarified butter and some water. Keep it aside.
2. Next, make the chana dal filling by combining all other ingredients together.
3. Now divide the dough in equal sized balls (like we do for other parathas).
4. Roll each ball in a disc of about 4 to 5 inch diameter.
5. Place a spoonful of filling in the center and bring together all the sides, sealing it tightly.
6. Again roll it out into a 5 inch circle.
7. Heat a griddle and place this paratha to cook on medium flame; smear some ghee on both sides so that it turns golden brown in color.
8. Serve it hot with plain yogurt/raita/butter/pickle on the side.
