Spiced Pear and Jalapeno Spritzer

If you have been following my blog, you would know how much I love making drinks with fresh seasonal fruits. And since its peak summer time in Delhi with mercury raising to almost 43 degrees C, there can be no better way than freshly homemade juices and lemonades to keep oneself sufficiently hydrated, also not indulging in those chemical loaded packaged stuff.

While the markets these days are flooded with bounties like mangoes, melons, plums, peaches, cherries and litchis....I also found these delicious ripe pears at one of the fruit stalls; instantly picked them up with the idea of making this refreshing pear spritzer (because I had already tried some yummilicious drinks using mangoes, peaches and litchis, so obviously wanted to experiment something new...a food blogger's mind you know :) ). As I reached home, browsed the net what other ingredient could blend with these delicious stone fruits. The recipe of pineapple and jalapeno cocktail at one of the food blogs grabbed my attention and I was all set to infuse our local green chilies (the thicker and less spicier variety) in my non-boozy drink. To my amazement, it came out absolutely lip-smacking with sharpness of chilies just elevating its flavor to a different level.

I must say, if you are looking for some non-alcoholic drinks to impress your guests at your next party, this recipe is a keeper. Don't forget to bookmark or pin for later reference.

Method

  1. Combine water, sugar and chopped pear pieces in a saucepan. Cook covered on low flame for about 30 minutes. Keep stirring in between occasionally.
  2. Switch off the flame and let the pears seep in the syrup for 15 minutes or until it comes to room temperature.
  3. Strain the syrup through a fine mesh, pressing the pear chunks nicely so that all their flavor is released in the syrup.
  4. Pear syrup is ready; store in a glass bottle to chill.
  5. To make the spritzer, rub a lemon wedge across the rims of the glasses.
  6. Combine salt and red chili powder in a plate. Dab the rims of the glasses on the salt chili mixture to coat them all over. You may skip this step if not required.
  7. Slice the jalapeno in small roundels. Pound 4 to 5 slices with lemon juice. You may increase the amount of jalapenos depending on the spice level required in the drink.
  8. Next, mix in the jalapeno spiced lemon juice in the pear syrup.
  9. Put some ice cubes in serving glasses. Pour 4 to 5 tbsp of pear syrup in each glass. Top it with club soda and garnish with pear slices, jalapeno roundels, few mint leaves and lemon wedges. Serve chilled.
