Chocolate Malai Peda | Malai Peda | Malai Peda Recipe

Malai Peda is one of the most popular Indian sweets. These little discs of deliciousness are primarily made using fresh chhena (cheese curd), khoya (dried milk solids) and condensed milk. There are numerous variants of Malai Peda that are available in the sweets shops these days; while the plain peda and kesar peda are the most common, what I am fond of the most is the chocolate flavored one. Absolutely decadent and melt-in-mouth, these chocolate pedas make for an apt sweet for any festival or special occasion.  Well, I am making them for the upcoming Raksha Bandhan, if you too are looking for some homemade sweet recipes, do try them out. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Before I jump to the recipe, let me tell you that I have used fresh chhena. For that, bring about a liter of full fat milk to a boil. Let it cool for 5 minutes and then slowly start adding a little vinegar until the milk is nicely curdled. Strain it using a muslin cloth, wash with cold water and hang it for about 30 minutes to dry up. Chhena is ready.

Ingredients

  • Fresh chhena - 1/2 cup
  • Crumbled khoya - 1/2 cup
  • Milk powder - 1/2 cup
  • Cocoa powder - 1/4 cup
  • Condensed milk - 100 ml
  • Chocolate chips - 1 tbsp
  • Ghee/clarified butter - 1 tsp
  • Finely chopped pistachios/almonds - for garnishing

Method

  • In a plate, add crumbled khoya and chhena.
  • Knead them using heals of your palm until the mixture becomes smooth.
  • Mix in cocoa powder and milk powder. Again knead so that dry powders are nicely combined into the mixture.
  • In a pan, add ghee and the khoya mixture. Cook the mixture on low heat. It will first get to a liquid consistency. Add in chocolate chips and condensed milk.
  • Cook again stirring continuously on low heat until the mixture turns into a dough and starts leaving the sides of the pan.
  • Transfer it to a bowl and let the mixture cool until you are able to handle it with your hands.
  • Knead it again for a minute to smoothen.
  • Pinch out equal lemon sized balls. Shape into discs and make an indent using your thumb. Sprinkle some chopped pistachios and almonds. Let the pedas cool to firm up.
  • Pedas would stay fresh at room temperature for a day. For a longer shelf life, store in refrigerator.
