Braided Stuffed Pizza Bread

This delicious stuffed braided pizza had been pending on my baking list for quite a while now; so, yesterday, when my husband proposed to go out for an Italian lunch, I had the much awaited opportunity knocking on my door to surprise him with this home-baked beauty. Oozing with aromas of an array of Italian herbs, palatableness of mozzarella and tongue-tickling flavors of corns, olives, tomatoes and onions drenched in dollops of pizza sauce, it came out really awesome and simply added to the list of my baking adventures. And yes! my husband too was flabbergasted by its amazing flavors which were no less than what we get in the restaurants. If you are also keen on trying this yummylicious bread, here you go with the recipe.

Ingredients (for bread)

All purpose flour - 3 cups
Dry active yeast - 7 gms (1 sachet)
Milk - 1/2 cup
Water - 1/2 cup
Sugar - 1 tsp
Salt - 1 tsp
Olive oil - 3 tbsp
Garlic powder - 1 tsp
Chili flakes - 1 tsp
Black pepper powder - 1 tsp
Dried oregano - 1 tsp
Dried rosemary - 1 tsp

Ingredients (for filling)

Onions (finely chopped) - 1/2 cup
Boiled corns - 1/4 cup
Black olives - 1/4 cup
Yellow/Red bellpepper (finely chopped) - 1/4 cup
Mushrooms (finely chopped) - 1/4 cup
Salt - as per taste
Garlic powder - 1 tsp
Chili flakes - 1 tsp
Black pepper powder - 1 tsp
Dried oregano - 1 tsp
Dried rosemary - 1 tsp
Pizza sauce or tomato ketchup - 2 tbsp
Olive oil - 1/2 tbsp
Mozzarella cheese (grated or sliced) - 1/4 cup

Method

1. Heat water and milk in a saucepan. Add sugar and let it dissolve completely. Make sure, the liquid is lukewarm, neither hot nor cold.
2. Add in the yeast in this lukewarm mixture and let it activate which will take around 7 to 8 minutes. You will know that yeast has activated when the liquid gets frothy.
3. In the meantime, sift in all purpose flour along with salt and other spices.
4. Next, add in oil and yeast mixture to the flour and knead it to a pliable dough.
5. Smear dough with some oil and cover with a kitchen towel; keep it at a warm place and let rise for about 1 to 1.5 hours.
6. Till the time dough rises, make the filling.
7. Heat olive oil in pan. Add in all the vegetables and let saute for 3 to 4 minutes. Next, season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, herbs and pizza sauce.
8. Let the stuffing cool completely.
9. By the time, dough would also have been risen.
10. Knock off the air from the dough and again knead for about 5 minutes.
11. Divide the dough in two equal portions.
12. Roll out each portion in a long sheet as shown below.

13. Place the stuffing along with mozzarella in the center of the rolled dough.

14. Next, make the cuts as shown in the image below.

15. Now, start sealing the stuffing by bringing together the strips from each side alternatively, sort of making a braid. See the image below for reference.

16. Place the braided dough on a baking tray and let it rise for additional 30 minutes.

17. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
18. After 30 minutes, smear the breads with some melted butter and nigella seeds, then pop them in the oven to bake for around 30 minutes. Your bread should be ready. Serve it warm.
