One of my most favorite summer drinks that I can relate with my childhood days is MANGO FROOTI. So refreshing and bursting with flavors, it was one of the go-to drinks whenever we returned from school. However, growing up, I realized that all these packaged drinks including our very favorite store bought Frooti had so many preservatives and was loaded with sugars, artificial flavoring and colors. Therefore, there came a time (precisely when I started food blogging) when I stopped consuming all these packaged drinks and started trying out fresh drinks made with real fruits at home. This HOMEMADE MANGO FROOTI is one amongst many such drinks. Let me tell you, it is absolutely refreshing, absolutely tasty and yes, preservative free and color free too. Not to mention, a perfect healthy drink for your kids. Do give it a try...

INGREDIENTS

  • Sweet and ripe mangoes - 2, I used big sized SAFEDA mangoes
  • Raw mango - 1 small piece
  • Tart variety of mango - 1, I used a medium sized SINDOORI mango
  • Sugar - 3/4 to 1 cup
  • Lemon juice - 2 tbsp
  • Water - 5 cups
Tip: It is important to use a tart variety of mango along with sweet ones to get that authentic khatta meetha taste. Therefore, I have used sindoori mango, which is easily available in northern parts of India. As for the sweeter varieties, you can go with any of the likes such "dussehri" or "alphonso". Make sure, the variety that you are using is not very fibrous for example as "chausa" or "langda".

METHOD (yields 6 to 8 glasses)

  • Start by washing, peeling and chopping all the mango varieties.
  • Blend them to a smooth puree in a grinder. I got about 2 cups of pulp. (1 cup = 250 ml)
  • Transfer this mixture to a saucepan along with sugar and 5 cups of water. You can add 3/4 cup to 1 cup of sugar depending on the sweetness of your mangoes.
  • Bring this mixture to one boil on medium flame, then simmer for 6 to 8 minutes and turn off the heat.
  • Let the mixture completely cool down.
  • Strain through a fine mesh and store in sterilized glass bottles. This would stay fresh for 2 - 3 days in refrigerator.
  • For serving, put some ice cubes in serving glasses and top it up with the mango juice or homemade mango frooti.
